From the Daily News this morning: “Ex City Manager collects salary, severance”
Here’s a link to the Daily News story reporting this morning former City Manager Jerry Berry’s work in Port Alberni for which he’s being paid by the provincial government while he continues to be paid the balance of his two year severance from the City of Nanaimo.
All in, Mr. Berry is getting roughly $5000 a week from the taxpayers of Nanaimo and, under the sweetheart deal he got from our Council, he can make another $3,750 per week without a reduction in our donation. Now that’s deal making at its best. Is there no limit to Council’s ability to grant the wishes of those who no longer want to serve? How many others at City Hall may be eligible for such tax funded generosity? And what kind of precedent has been set for them?
Mr.Berry’s settlement was very likely solely negotiated by staff (HR and Legal)which surely must be a conflict of interest as they are setting the precedent for future staff exits, perhaps even their own.Taxpayers would have been better served if an independent entity was consulted. Can you imagine anyone in their right mind agreeing to Berry keeping his car allowance after leaving his position with the City?
This fiasco falls on the shoulders of the Mayor as he agreed to it.I can tell you one thing for certain,if it was my decision Mr.Berry would not be driving around the province doing his work at the expense of the Nanaimo taxpayers. It is a disgrace and an insult, and those involved at City hall, elected officials and senior staff, should hang their collective heads in shame.
